Although we often associate pigeons with city life, there exists a vast array of striking and lesser-known pigeon species. As we delve deeper into the world of pigeons, their uniqueness and appeal become more apparent. In fact, some scientists argue that the rock pigeon, a common city bird, was the first bird ever domesticated by humans. Its presence can be traced back to ancient Mesopotamia, where it was featured in mosaics, on coins, and as figurines dating as far back as 4500 BC.
Despite the common misconception that pigeons are unintelligent, research has shown that they possess remarkable cognitive abilities. A 2017 study revealed that pigeons possess the capacity to understand concepts of time and space, akin to humans and primates. Pigeons are also skilled navigators, able to find their way back to their nests from distances of up to 1.3k miles (nearly 2.1k km), even if they have been taken from their nests, moved in isolation, and disoriented.
The beauty, diversity, and remarkable abilities of these winged creatures make them a fascinating subject worth exploring beyond the concrete jungles of our cities.
