Dad And Daughter Celebrate 8th Birthday Dressed As Mermaid, And This Is Definitely Parenting Goals

This eight-year-old girl had only one request for her birthday this year: a mermaid photoshoot… Well, actually, she had two requests: she wanted her dad to join in. And boy, did he deliver.

These days, we expect a lot more from dads. They’re no longer congratulated for simply changing nappies and watching their kids for a few hours – and nor should they be – but it’s still awesome when we see them go above and beyond to make their children happy. And those dads are definitely worth celebrating.

One American photographer came across a truly excellent dad recently. So excellent, she had to share him with the world, and we’re glad she did.

“I had the honor of doing a mermaid session for this sweet girl’s 8th birthday,” wrote photographer Desirae Deal on her Facebook page, “and all she wanted was for her dad to join in on the fun. Let me tell you he did NOT disappoint!”

“They are only little for so long”

Seriously, you can see the joy on both their faces. Desirae, from Arkansas in the American south, does a lot of mermaid photoshoots – it’s one of her most popular booking requests – but this one was special. “The laughs, the joy, and the memories they created were the absolute best gift… I have no doubt that this story, this priceless memory, will be talked about and cherished for generations to come.”

We have no doubt either. If this was me I’d be whipping this photo out for my 18th, 21st… hell, even my wedding. These pictures are amazing. Desirae finished her post saying, “Take the pictures. Play with them every chance you get, for they are only little for so long.”

If that means getting your dad-bod out and splashing around in a lake with your little girl, that’s what you’ve got to do.

Desirae is a professional photographer in the Lamar, Arkansas, area and is married to her best friend. She has 4 amazing children of her own, so it’s no wonder she executed the photoshoot to a T.

“I began my journey with photography after my first son died at 3 months old. I was sadly left with very few images of him. As a result, I became obsessed with photographing my 3 children. I studied graphic design at Arkansas Tech University and used that knowledge to further my editing skills,” Desirae wrote on her website.

She specializes in creative children portraits and fine art photography. “My style is fun and vibrant, but the real magic is in the memories. I strive to capture more than just an image. My goal is to provide an experience and memory that will last your family a lifetime.”

We’ve had stories about mermaids for centuries and at this point, it’s hard to even imagine another successful attempt at rebooting the classic. However, I’m sure that even Hans Christian Andersen and Disney executives would appreciate this new father-daughter take on the genre.

People everywhere absolutely loved the photoshoot, with the pictures racking up over 140k shares so far. “I am absolutely amazed at the overwhelming response to this session,” Desirae wrote, adding that she’s looking at taking her ‘mermaid’ photoshoots across the country with so many girls – and quite a few dads – saying how much they’d love to be involved.

Beyond just loving the fact that this dad was doing what made his daughter happy, people wanted to point out the greater impact things like this could have on little girls – and on other dads who might see it.

Here’s what people said about the adorable photoshoot:
