Street art is a medium of self-expression that requires only public space to captivate and delight many. Unencumbered by the constraints of time and place, it can emerge spontaneously to catch the eye of any passerby.
Meet Frankey, an Amsterdam-based street artist also known as Frank de Ruwe. He is recognized for his clever and understated interpretation of public spaces, showcasing the limitless nature of creativity.
Frankey’s works range from a canal-fishing Darth Vader to a street pole transformed into a sword, popping up unexpectedly and adding an element of surprise to people’s everyday experiences.

“When I was in primary school, I became friends with a boy whose brother was part of a hip-hop group. Graffiti is one of the elements of hip-hop, so I attempted to illustrate my hip-hop cassette tapes in a graffiti style. The vibrant and sizable graffiti works in public spaces always intrigued me and still do.
However, I had never come across any graffiti pieces that could make me chuckle until I stumbled upon the world of urban interventions. I find it amazing that by adding something to the streets, you can bring a smile to people’s faces,” Frankey responded when asked about his passion for street art.
