Renowned Chinese sculptor Dending Rui Yao was tasked with creating a masterpiece from a massive redwood trunk, and he knew exactly what he wanted to sculpt: a powerful lion. The team of 20 people worked tirelessly for three years to bring the massive wooden sculpture, titled Oriental Lion, to life.
Located in Fortune Plaza Times Square in Wuhan, the capital of China’s Hubei Province, the Oriental Lion measures an impressive 47.5 feet long, 16.5 feet high, and 13 feet wide, making it the largest wooden sculpture on record in the Guinness World Records.
Every detail of this majestic piece was crafted with care, from the super-smooth finish of the head, paws, and tail to the rougher texture of the torso. As a symbol of unwavering guardianship and strength, lion statues are common in Chinese palaces and temples. Oriental Lion has become a monument in the capital city of Hubei Province, representing its folklore and culture.
