20 Comics Celebrating Japanese Culture and More by Evacomics

Evangeline Neo, a Singaporean comic artist, has gained popularity for her comics that celebrate Japanese culture and more. After completing her studies in Tokyo in 2014, Evangeline spent four years in Japan and realized how different its culture was compared to her own. To cope with the cultural shock, she expressed her experiences through comics.

Evangeline began making comics in 2012, sharing them on social media, where she has amassed 58.3k followers on her Instagram account alone. “I was studying in Japan and missed home (Singapore) very much.

I was also having some culture shock as living there and visiting as a tourist are totally different experiences. I also noticed I had many friends who loved Japanese culture like me, so they were curious about how life was like there,” she shared in an interview.

We’ve selected some of Evangeline’s comics that illustrate the differences between Japan and other countries.

Evangeline explained her working process, saying, “I first come up with the theme, for example, the difference between riding trains. Then I sketch out the differences in what I want to say. Sometimes there may be three versions of the same theme, and I have to pick the one that appears the most interesting. Sometimes it can take as little as 30 minutes, and sometimes it can take several days to refine just the idea and sketches.”
